据The A.V. Club的看法，《X-Kid》被制作为Green Day于1992年发行的专辑《Kerplunk》中《Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?》和《One Of My Lies》两首歌曲的。

《X-Kid》的创作是为了纪念一位已经自杀的与乐队关系很亲密的朋友。“我真的不想太多地谈论这个，”BJ说，“太沉重了。”这首歌是BJ写给在加州Rodeo一起长大的好友的，后者在2009年自杀。然而，在吟唱此悲剧的同时，这首歌也是关于整个X一代（在大约1960-1980之间出生的人）。BJ很多次的在采访中把自己称为Ex-Kid/X-Kid。但他克服了这代人共有的苦难和煎熬，变得成熟，而他这位好友，没能做到，他选择了逃脱。歌词“Here goes nothing, the shouting’s over”写出BJ在这位已故的朋友身上看到自己的影子。他对自己的朋友几乎没得到什么帮助感到很悲伤，尽管他希望有人能在一切都太晚前有办法去拯救他的朋友。有一种人，他们本质是好的，是善的，但是他们从来没有真正学到过如何去成为一名成年人，可以说BJ逝去的朋友就属于这种人。
