新线是1967年就成立的一家独立制片发行公司，以面对美国高校发行欧洲及本土低成本恐怖片为主，1979年进入制片业，投资拍摄低成本恐怖片。 1990年通过向FOX购买其不敢发行的香港嘉禾电影《忍者神龟》并大获成功后，成为有广泛影响的独立电影发行公司。1993年新线被电视巨头特纳收购，因特纳控股时代华纳，因此新线随即被并入时代华纳集团，但新线的原总裁谢伊当年在被特纳收购时仍持有新线主要股权，并且享有公司的自主经营权，所以新线目前虽然同属时代华纳集团，但其电影经营与集团内部的其他电影公司并无相关。
