沈锡辉教授在细菌六型分泌系统的功能研究及效应蛋白鉴定、细菌生物膜形成及运动性调控、植物内共生微生物组及其对农作物的促生抗旱功能研究、芳香化合物降解机制等方面取得了比较突出的成绩, 包括 1、首次发现细菌六型分泌系统的离子转运功能,率先报道了一类离子结合型T6SS效应蛋白在离子转运和细菌抗环境胁迫及宿主营养免疫中发挥重要作用;2、以谷氨酸棒杆菌为模型系统揭示了分枝硫醇在细菌抗多重环境胁迫中的多样化作用机制;3、发现细菌鞭毛三型分泌系统
伴侣蛋白FliS通过与FlgM相互作用而抑制其分泌,进而影响细菌鞭毛系统基因表达调控,从而揭示了鞭毛系统基因表达的关闭机制。
